No one likes to wake up from bed after a warm and cozy night under sheets or blankets and put their feet on a cold floor. No matter the weather is cold, hot or warm a fluffy soft rug under our feet especially when we are getting our beds is another level of comfort.
What is the correct size for a rug under a king-size bed?
In this article we have collected the opinions of experts and customers' reviews to answer this question for you.
Why a rug not wall to wall carpet or Moket carpet?
Area rugs have many advantages over carpets or Moket; they are much easier handle and apply, you can change their positions if you decided to change the room décor, and most importantly are easier to clean.
However, finding the ideal fit for a king-size bed can be difficult. The key is to find a rug that has the correct proportions with your King Bed and your room size. A rug that is too large can make a room feel crowded, while one that is too small can look too poor.
The ideal area rug for a king bed should be around 10 feet wide and eight feet long at a minimum. A rule of thumb is that the rug should extend 18 to 24 inches beyond the sides of a king-size bed, and allow 10 to 20 inches of bare floor between the rug's sides and the walls. The rug should also be kept out of the way of doors, leaving enough space for the rug to avoid getting caught under the door. Furthermore, the rug should not come into contact with any outside furniture, such as dressers. Allow at least two to three inches between these ancillary items and the area rug.
But you do not have to stick to these dimensions. However, there are few rules when deciding for the right size of your bedroom rug:
Rug sizing and the bedroom decor
You should think well and decide how you want your bedroom to look like, what exactly are you going to put on the rug? is it only the bedframe or also side tables or stand lights? This way you can decide for the correct size of your rug. It is commonly stated that all major furniture pieces in a room should fit beneath the area rug. However, because king-size beds are so large, there are some exceptions to this rule. Now let's see how these options look like and which best suit your room and taste:
#1 The bed frame, lights and sides all on the rug.
Choose a rug that can be centered underneath your bed if you want it to take up the majority of the space in your bedroom. To make your room appear more homogeneous, place all of the furniture legs on top of your rug. Allow at least 10 inches (25 cm) between the rug's edge and the room's trim. This layout works best in a large bedroom with enough space between the walls and the edges of your rug. If you have a bench at the end of your bed, make sure the rug extends 10 inches (25 cm) beyond it so you have enough room to walk.
#2 Only the bed frame on the rug
In this case, experts advise that the rug is better set under the bottom third of the bed. Keep the rug's long edge parallel to the foot of your bed. Slide the rug under the legs of your bed so that it only covers the floor beneath the bottom third of your bed. Allow the rug's edges to come out from the sides and end of your bed. This option is great for longer rooms and shows off more of the rug’s design. This way also you can decorate your bedroom with a smaller, more affordable rug.
#3 The lower two-thirds of the bed and the bench sit on the rug.
In this case, set up the rug 5 in (13 cm) from your bedside tables. Turn the rug so that the long edge runs parallel to the foot of your bed. Only two of your bed's legs will rest on the rug. Allow a space between your nightstands and the rug, but make sure the rug is high enough that you can easily step onto it when you get out of bed.
#4 Two runner rugs on bed sides.
If you can't afford a large area rug, use 3 ft 5 ft (0.91 m 1.52 m) runners to surround the sides of the bed. Because runners are smaller and less expensive, they work well with any bed size and are an excellent choice for those on a tight budget. You can place your nightstands on top of the runners or leave some space between them and the rugs' edges. You can also make your bed more comfortable by placing a runner at the foot of it.
Editor's tips
Before purchasing a rug, mark out the dimensions on your floor with painter's tape. This allows you to see if the rug size will work well and appear balanced in your space.
For small to medium-sized rooms, an 8-foot-by-10-foot rug is ideal. The bed frame can sit fully on it, but the nightstands must remain off or be slim in order to fit on the rug. This size can also be used to cover the bottom two-thirds of the bed frame for a longer look, leaving the head of the bed and nightstands exposed on the floor.
For larger rooms, a 9-foot-by-12-foot rug is ideal. The bed frame and nightstands can be fully supported by the rug. A bench can also be placed at the foot. It makes a room appear larger and more expansive.
Tips for Non-Standard Rooms & Layouts
Some rooms do not have the rectangular or square shape or are in the usual size, this leads to especial bed positions and accordingly rug set up too. Here’s what to do if you have a unique layout or non-standard circumstance.
If one side of your bed is against a wall. Choose a 5-by-8-foot rug and put about two inches of it under the open side of the bed. It creates the illusion of a larger room while providing plenty of plush comfort on the floor.
If your room already has carpeted floors. Layer a 5-foot-by-8-foot or 6-foot-by-9-foot rug under the bed's end. Place the rug two inches beneath the footboard, allowing the majority of the design to stand out and add flair to your space. Because the floor is already carpeted, you'll have a soft landing for your feet in the morning.
