We combine hands-on product testing, standardized measurements, evidence review, expert input, and transparent editorial standards to help readers make informed decisions about their sleep, health, and sleep products.
Mattress scoring
Eight factors, one recommendation score
Seven factors describe mattress performance. Buying Protection adds a smaller policy-based factor because trials, returns, warranties, and purchase obligations affect whether we can recommend buying it.
Overall score = the sum of each factor score × its published weight. All eight weights total 100%. See the full scoring system.
Evidence basis
Each score shows what supports it
- Quantitative measurementsControlled readings establish the result for motion, response, edge behavior, pressure distribution, and temperature where recorded.
- Verified constructionMaterials, layer depth, firmness, zoning, and support design explain why the mattress behaves as measured.
- Model-specific owner patternsQualifying ownership experiences add longer-use context around durability, comfort consistency, and buying terms.
- Buyer protectionsTrial, return, warranty, shipping, and fee terms show the practical risk attached to the purchase.
Measurements and assessments answer different questions
Measured metrics use published conversion rules. Pressure relief, support, cooling, and durability use component rubrics that connect quantitative results with construction and body-position context.
Evidence coverage remains separate from performance. A smaller owner sample narrows the claims a review can support; it does not automatically lower the mattress score.
Audience fit
A good mattress is only good for the right sleeper
We translate performance into fit guidance for side, back, stomach, and combination sleepers across three body-weight ranges: under 130 pounds, 130–230 pounds, and over 230 pounds. Where a mattress has multiple firmness options or two usable sides, we assess them separately.
The overall score supports comparison, but the fit table and “best for” guidance should drive the personal decision.
Current-model check
The Process drawer identifies the exact model reviewed
Each mattress review identifies the evaluated configuration and the date of its latest model check. When that configuration matches the version currently sold, the review says so in one place.
If a newer construction supersedes the reviewed model under the same name, the Process drawer and the product-change banner identify the version covered by the score.
Deal Truth
We track prices, not countdown clocks
Mattress promotions often run for long periods. We compare dated final prices for the same size and configuration instead of treating a percentage-off banner as proof of a rare sale. Deal Truth never changes the mattress rating.
Other sleep products
Hands-on experience leads the review
For pillows, bedding, blankets, sleep technology, and other products, we prioritize direct use. We record the product and configuration, setup, test period, relevant use cases, practical strengths, failure points, and comparisons with similar products.
These categories use product-specific ten-point rubrics when a numeric score makes the experience easier to compare. A mattress score is never reused for a different kind of product.
Health and editorial review
Expert review is matched to the claim
Sleep-health content is reviewed by an appropriately qualified medical or subject-matter expert when clinical accuracy requires it. Product reviewers assess performance and user experience; medical experts review health, biomechanics, safety, or clinical statements within their professional scope.
Bylines, reviewer names, credentials, update dates, sources, and publication history remain visible so readers can see who was responsible for the work.
