BedInABox is a mattress company founded in 2006 by Bill Bradley. As the name suggests, it specializes in shipping beds in boxes. Although that’s not special nowadays since most mattress companies do that, what’s impressive is that the company was the first to invent the machine that compresses mattresses to make it easier to ship them in boxes. So you might say it started the trend, and hence came the company’s name.
In this review, we'll go over everything about BedInABox's Original mattress, which offers a classic and versatile memory foam inner design.

BedinABox Original Overview
Cooling Performance - Given that it’s an all-foam mattress, the cooling performance it offers is excellent and very noteworthy. The mattress stays cool all night and is even strikingly close to the cooling performance of some good hybrid mattresses.
Pain Relief - This mattress provided excellent shoulder, hips, and back pain relief. The exceptional pain relief was mainly due to its exceptional materials which provided great spinal alignment in all sleeping positions.
Responsiveness - The responsiveness of this mattress is very impressive for an all-foam mattress, maintaining medium bounce feedback.
Versatility - The mattress is perfect for both back and side sleepers and accommodates all sleeping positions with no issues, making it a very safe and versatile choice for almost any type of sleeper.
Warranty - BedInABox offers an outstanding 20-Year Warranty on this mattress. They have a huge faith in the longevity of their products, which indicates the usage of excellent foam quality in this mattress.
Not Ideal for Very Heavy-Weight Sleepers - The inner comfort layer is not thicker than usual, which might throw off the body alignment of very heavy sleepers (+380 lbs). However, this helps the mattress stay more suitable for most types of sleepers.

Unboxing the BedInABox Original Mattress
The mattress unboxing experience, as you would expect from the company that made it a trend, is fun and pretty easy. Once you get the mattress out of the box and unfold it, it's ready to go and be laid on the bed frame.
Just like that the mattress starts to fill its gaps with air, and we found that it takes an outstanding best-in-class 8 minutes for the mattress to expand up to the very edges.
The BedInABox Original Mattress doesn't have the problem where some brands fail to extend all the way to the ends. Proper edge expansion supports you even towards the mattress edges and makes your bed look better. We found the BedInABox to have some of the best edge expansion we’ve seen in a mattress.
Firmness, Feel, and Comfort for BedInABox Original Mattress
BedInABox Original Mattress Firmness
The mattress only sinks a little bit before you can feel the feedback from its inner foam layers.
Accordingly, the mattress is in the medium-firm range, which makes it suitable for most types of sleepers. It would be suitable for most heavy-weight sleepers, and unless you like firmer mattresses don't forget you can always try the mattress for yourself before you can return it with the 120-day trial period that BedInABox offers.
The outermost layer of the mattress has a textured design that feels good and is soft to the touch. It consists of a knit cover that extends and wraps around the bed in a stunning blue color. The material feels luxurious, and that makes you confident in using the mattress as well as proud of it.
We tried a combination of sleeping positions to see how comfortable the mattress feels given its key features, such as level of firmness.
The mattress did feel comfortable in all sleeping positions given the fact that our reviewer was of average weight. That being said, it should feel as comfortable for lighter-weight sleepers.
Being medium-firm, it should be suitable for most heavy-weight sleepers (above 250 lbs).

Constructions, Materials, and Design of the BedInABox Mattress
Materials and Design
The mattress is an all-foam construction consisting of multiple layers that are 11 inches thick in total.
The inner layer designs are a mix of high-quality memory foam, density foam, that helps with supporting your body to its correct position alignment, and a luxurious outer circular knit cover that has a blue border fabric.
There are three main layers making up the BedInABox Original mattress.
- The Outer Layer - Smooth Knit Cover, which is a great-looking outer fabric with blue borders surrounding it and a 420-gram-weight circular knit. It has a detailed fabric that feels smooth and comfortable to the touch.
- The Middle Layer - Consists of 3 inches of high-quality gel foam, also known as memory foam, and is responsible for the cooling performance feature of the mattress, which we talk about in detail in the following Performance section of the review.
- The Bottom Support Layer - is an 8 inches density support foam. This layer is responsible for the level of responsiveness and firmness of the mattress and helps adjust your sleeping position alignment to make it the correct one and furtherly make your sleeping habits feel comfortable.
Performance of the BedInABox Original Mattress
The cooling performance of the mattress was surprisingly good. The all-foam design unexpectedly felt cool all night and does a great job absorbing heat from your body.
Our cooling performance test consists of 20-minute full naps on each side to see how cool and comfortable stays. We felt the coolness of the mattress the whole time, effectively on each side.
We did another test where we spent a full night's sleep on the mattress, testing all sleeping positions, and the mattress still held pretty well, absorbing and dissipating the heat away from our bodies and making us feel comfortable and cool all night.
Given how well it did for a foam mattress, it’s one of the best foam mattresses we tried when it comes to cooling performance. It even outperforms some hybrid mattresses.
With that being said, we rate the cooling performance of the BedInABox mattress a solid 4.9/5.
We did our two motion isolation tests. The first consists of putting a glass full of water on one side of the bed and dropping a 20 lb ball on the other side, and observing motion propagation to the glass of water. The second test consists of rolling on one side of the bed and having our partner report the motion they feel on the other side of the bed.
Motion isolation was incredible on this mattress. The all-foam inner design helps reduce motion very effectively.
During the first test, the water barely moved at the instance when the ball hit the mattress surface, and the glass itself barely got affected.
During the second test, we saw the same trend with the BedInABox mattress barely causing any motion propagating to the other side of the bed.
Accordingly, the mattress passed the motion isolation test with some of the best motion isolation performance we’ve seen, thanks to the all-foam structure that absorbs shocks and motion very well.
We scored the BedInABox a full 5/5 in our motion isolation tests.
Your partner shouldn't be able to feel any movement from your side. This is comfortable for both of you and gives you confidence in the way you sleep, especially if you like to change positions throughout the night.
You might think responsiveness might not be that good since, usually, motion isolation goes against good responsiveness. However, rest assured that, surprisingly, this was not the case with our tests.
We did our test where we place a 20 lb ball on the mattress, then we lift the ball and observe how long it takes for the mattress to return to its original shape after the ball was removed. Faster shape recovery indicates better responsiveness, so you don't feel "stuck" in the mattress and can easily change positions while you sleep.
Before our test, we did not expect great responsiveness due to the excellent motion isolation performance. To our surprise, the mattress took 0.4 seconds to return to its original form.
This is a rare case where an all-foam mattress nails both motion isolation and response time, being in the sweet spot for both without sacrificing one in favor of the other.
We rated the BedInABox mattress’s response time a solid 4.8/5.
Edges were very solid and held very effectively as well. We did a couple of tests with this one. The first test was a simple one where we tried to push the edges as hard as we could and observe their feedback as we pushed as well as when we stopped pushing.
While pushing the mattress, it only sank a little before we felt the counter-pressure. As we lift our hands, the response time for it to take its original form was as well above average. Making it an excellent combination of not feeling overly firm or very soft and cushy.
Another test we do consists of sitting on the mattress’s edge and measuring the sinkage caused by our bodies' weight. And the results seemed to be the same. The mattress held the weight of our reviewer’s body pretty well. We believe you won’t have any problems using the whole surface area of the BedInABox mattress while sleeping with your partner.
Given how solid the edge support was, we rate the edge support a strong 4.7/5.
We test mattress noise by dropping a heavy ball on the mattress and recording the moment of impact to see how many decibels it produces. The moment of impact produced 22 decibels, which is within the “whisper quiet” range. We gave it a noise score of 5/5.
We determine whether a mattress is good for sex based on a number of criteria. A mattress that provides good bounce, cooling, edge support, and minimal noise should be ideal when it comes to sex performance.
In this case, when it comes to BedInABox Original, it was amazing when it comes to edge support and cooling and very decent with bounce and noise. The mattress should be comfortable, and you shouldn’t have any issues using it during sex.
With its combined excellent performance in those aspects, we scored the sex performance a strong 4.7/5.
Foam mattresses are usually good for pressure relief. Since they take the shape of your sleeping position and respond accordingly to the sides that apply pressure the most from your weight on the mattress, such as the hips and shoulders. However, it is important that the materials used are soft enough to relieve pressure without sacrificing supportiveness.
Our pressure relief test consists of a 20-minute nap test on each side, and then reporting the pressure caused to different body zones. The pressure map below illustrates how the mattress responds to each sleeping position.
Front Sleeping - the BedInABox mattress provided just the right amount of softness and support to allow our knees to slightly sink into the mattress while extending and relieving pressure off our backs.
Back Sleeping - the mattress did a decent job aligning our back to the correct position, thus relieving pain and making it comfortable to sleep on your back all night.
Side Sleeping - the mattress provided enough counter pressure from the mattress’s foam layers on the hips and shoulders, and the right alignment for sleeping on the side seemed to be accurate. You should feel very comfortable while sleeping on your side during the night as well.
Along with motion isolation, and responsiveness, pain relief was one of the top-rated features in our tests, scoring 5/5.

BedInABox Mattress FAQs
How long do BedInABox mattresses last?
Given the high-quality inner and outer materials used to make the all-foam structure of the mattress and putting into consideration the whopping 20-year warranty they offer. We believe the mattress should be perfectly fine for a least 20 years as they indicate.
Is the BedInABox Mattress Flippable?
The BedInABox mattress is technically flippable. However, you should not need to flip the mattress unless you want a much firmer feel. We recommend using the BedInABox mattress on its designated side for the ideal comfort and feel.
Who made BedInABox?
Bill Bradley is the founder of the BedInABox company. It was founded in 2006, and from the name itself, what made it special was how they were the first to make machines that were able to compress mattresses in a way making it pretty easy to ship them in a box.
They have gone ahead since then and made a number of mattress models, both all-foam and hybrid, and made a number of bedding accessories all sold and shipped all across the US.
Are BedInABox Mattresses CertiPUR-US® certified?
Yes, all the foam material used by BedInABox is CertiPUR-US® certified.
Is the BedInABox Original Mattress a Good Deal?
From our testing results, we believe the BedInABox Original is a great deal if you’re looking for an all-foam mattress. We believe it’s one of the best all-foam mattresses out there given its price.
It offers great features that are extremely hard to find in this price bracket, such as the decent cooling performance, and the amazing motion isolation and responsiveness it offers.
What is BedInABox’s Return Policy?
BedInABox’s return policy indicates that you have up to 120 full days from the moment you receive the mattress at your doorstep.
BedInABox asks their customers to try the product for 60 days to see if they are satisfied with it before requesting a return.
BedInABox also has excellent customer service and post-purchase service. You can always call to inquire about any policies or ask for help before or after buying one of their mattresses.
What is the Memory Foam Density Used in the BedInABox Mattress?
For the Original mattress, BedInABox used a very high-quality gel foam that is 3 pounds in density. They use that as the basis for the Memory Foam Layer in almost all their mattresses, not just the Original.
They call this layer specifically the Comfort Layer as it assists in making you sleep in all sleeping positions with absolute comfort, without feeling like you’re stuck in the mattress. It acts as a great support along the Outer Layer and the actual Support layer we mentioned earlier in the review.
Additionally, it’s responsible for making you feel cool all night as it’s not affected by changes in temperature, and it will not be firmer in a cooler room and softer in a warmer room. It will have a consistent feel no matter the room temperature.
The BedInABox Original offers exceptional performance when it comes to motion isolation, responsiveness, and cooling.
It's the perfect combination if you're looking for a classic all-foam mattress with a competitive price range. Accordingly, it's definitely worth considering if that's your criteria.
