Helix is a brand dedicated to designing a range of products that promote better sleep. They include, in their line of products, three separate collections of mattresses.

The Helix Midnight Mattress, included in the core collection, is made specifically to fit sleepers’ needs and preferences. It is designed to relieve pressure points, adapt to your unique sleep positions, and offer a cool sleeping experience.

Helix Midnight mattress

In this article, we will test the Helix Midnight mattress, specifically regarding:

  • Pros and cons.
  • Unboxing experience.
  • Feel and comfort.
  • Construction and design.
  • Performance test results.
  • Warranty policies, company policies, and all the FAQs you might want to know.

Helix Midnight Mattress Overview

Pros

  • Improved Sleep Quality: The Helix Midnight comes with two responsive foams, the Helix comfort layer and the transition layer. These two layers combined provide great body contouring along with the perfect balance between support and comfort.
  • Advanced Cooling Technology: The mattress’s surface is wrapped in a GlaicoTex cover that helps dissipate excess body heat away from the mattress and prevents you from overheating while you sleep. The individually wrapped coils allow plenty of airflow into the mattress, which enhances the overall cooling factor of the bed.
  • Great Pressure Relief: Helix’s Midnight mattress offers exceptional pressure relief with its comfort layer of memory plus foam. This helps eliminate any feeling of discomfort and stiffness, giving you the best sleep experience possible and allowing you to wake up in the morning without the usual stiff feeling.
  • Ideal for back sleepers: The Helix Midnight mattress supports the natural curve of the spine, which makes it a great option for back sleepers. The combination of memory foam and reinforced coils gives the mattress the perfect balance of comfort and support.

Cons

  • Not for Stomach Sleepers: The mattress does not offer the level of support needed to sleep on your stomach. Stomach sleepers might deal with pressure on their chest or their neck, which can lead to spinal misalignment and overall discomfort for stomach sleepers.
  • Not for Heavy Sleepers: The firm level of the Helix Midnight may not provide the required level of support for heavier sleepers, which can lead to excessive sinkage. It’ll also reduce the durability of the mattress, as plus-size sleepers tend to compress mattresses more. Heavier sleepers will most likely experience increased pressure points and discomfort, especially in the hip and shoulder regions.

Who we Recommend the Helix Midnight Mattress for

  • Side sleepers: The Helix Midnight mattress is designed to support your body contours and keep your spine in alignment, making it a great choice for side sleepers.
  • Those who like a balanced foam feel: The combination of reinforced coils and memory foam layers gives the perfect sturdy support and body contouring needed. The memory foam, along with the transition foam, conforms to the body’s natural curves and relieves pressure points, reducing discomfort. It will not restrict movement like usual memory foam does and will ensure a comfortable and well-supported sleep surface.
  • Hot Sleepers: The Glaciotex top cover, in combination with the airflow allowed by the reinforced coils, helps dissipate heat and regulate temperature.
  • Back pain: The Helix Midnight mattress offers the perfect balance of comfort and support for back sleepers. The memory foam and transition foam will help distribute the body weight evenly and reduce pressure points. The memory foam will provide a comfortable and supportive sleeping surface by conforming to the body’s shape.

Unboxing the Helix Midnight Mattress

The Helix Midnight mattress comes compressed in a box, which you’ll have to unroll onto your bed or any surface. We recommend getting the help of a friend to unbox this mattress.

After unboxing the mattress and placing it on the sleeping surface, it took around 15 minutes to fully expand to its original form and was shortly followed by the full expansion of its edges. Which indicates the mattress’s great corner expansion ability.

For off-gassing, we initially noticed a slight odor emitted by the Helix Midnight Mattress. It took around 24 hours for the smell to completely dissipate, which is the average off-gassing period.

Firmness, Feel, and Comfort For Helix Midnight Mattress

Helix Midnight Mattress Firmness

The Helix Midnight Mattress has a medium firmness level with a score of 6/10 on the firmness scale. It’s important to note that the firmness profile of a mattress is subjective to the sleeper's weight. The heavier you weigh, the softer the mattress will feel.

Helix Midnight mattress firmness scale

The reinforced coils in the mattress contribute to its firmness. They impact the overall support and firmness of the bed, making it more supportive. Memory foam is known for its ability to conform to the body’s natural form, providing great body contouring. As for the transition foam, it is placed between the coils and memory foam to add overall support and balance firmness to the mattress.

Helix Midnight Mattress Feel

The Helix Midnight mattress blends support and comfort seamlessly. It provides the support you need while offering a comfortable, soft, and cool surface for a good night’s sleep.

The memory foam molds to your body’s shape and gently conforms to your curves, leaving you with a feeling of sinking into a soft and supportive cloud. The transition foam smooths out the feel of the layers underneath. In addition, the cooling cover infused with GlacioTex technology keeps you cool during your sleep.

As we lay on the mattress, we initially notice a gentle embrace of the memory foam. It offers a nice sensation of body contouring, almost like being enveloped in a soft and supportive hug.

The pressure points in areas like the shoulders, hips, and lower back are relieved as memory foam conforms to your body’s form. This helps reduce any discomfort, allowing you to get a comfortable sleep during the night.

Helix Midnight Mattress Comfort

To decide on the ideal mattress for you, you have to consider several factors. Those are your preferred sleep position, body weight, and personal preferences in terms of feel.

We carried out a test with the Helix Midnight Mattress to see how it performs in different sleeping positions and with various body weights.

The Helix Midnight is a hybrid medium bed that best fits average-weight sleepers and side sleepers. The mattress has reinforced coils and memory that work together to ensure proper spinal alignment, minimizing the potential risk of any pain or discomfort in the back region.

This mattress may not fit heavy stomach sleepers, as it will not provide sufficient support and will lead to discomfort in areas like the hips or shoulders due to increased pressure points and excessive sinkage. We will later cover the results shown in our pressure relief test.

Constructions, Materials, and Design

Materials and Design

Helix Midnight mattress

The Helix Midnight mattress is made up of well-thought-out layers and a design that creates its 11.5-inch thickness. It comes with three cover options: the Breathe Knit Cover (included), the GlacioTex™ Cooling Cover, and the GlacioTex™ Cooling Cover + Pillow Top. These options add to the versatility of the design. Below are the layers of the mattress in detail:

Layers

Helix Midnight mattress layers

  1. Cooling Top Cover: Choose from Helix's multiple cover options, all of which are breathable and cooling. One option even has a pillowtop layer for extra comfort. The Glaciotex technology found in the covers actively works to prevent you from overheating during the night, offering you a comfortable surface and enhancing your sleep quality.
  2. Memory Plus Foam: This layer excels at relieving pressure points in your body. It allows you to sleep with less discomfort, making it an ideal choice for people with joint pain. It is a slow-moving foam, which means when pressure is applied, it does not spring back into its original shape immediately. This allows it to adapt to your body’s shape perfectly.
  3. Helix Transition Foam: This layer acts as a transition between the memory foam and the reinforced coils; this ensures that you lay on a balanced and consistent sleeping surface. It offers the required support without being too firm.
  4. Wrapped Coils: These coils are made of high-quality materials and are encased in fabric pockets. This allows each coil to function independently, enhancing the performance of the mattress in terms of support and body contouring. This provides targeted support to a certain area of your body and reduces motion transfer, making it a great option for couples.
  5. DuraDense Foam: This layer of dense foam acts as a base for the upper layers of the mattress. It offers the mattress support and makes it more stable. It helps distribute your body’s weight evenly and maintains the structure of the mattress, ensuring that it will not sag or lose its form over time.

Performance of Helix Midnight Mattress

Cooling

The cooling performance of a mattress is a crucial factor, especially for hot sleepers or people who tend to sleep in warmer climates.

The presence of individually wrapped coils contributes to the cooling performance of the mattress by creating air channels that promote airflow and heat dissipation. This makes for great ventilation of excess body heat, preventing it from being trapped inside the mattress and overall keeping you cool.

We performed a cooling performance test on the Helix Midnight mattress by lying on it for 20 minutes and monitoring it for any body heat buildup.

The Helix Midnight excelled in our cooling test, as we noticed very little to no body heat buildup.

We give the Helix Midnight mattress a score of 4.7/5 on our cooling performance test.

Responsiveness

Responsiveness is particularly important for combination sleepers who tend to switch positions throughout their sleep. It depends on how quickly and effectively the mattress adapts to your change of movements, which allows ease of repositioning or adjusting to different sleep positions. Responsiveness is crucial for people who have physical impairments or even combination sleepers who tend to switch positions at night.

To test the responsiveness of the Helix Midnight mattress, we conducted a simple but effective test. We placed a 20-pound ball on the mattress and waited a second for the ball to settle. Then, we removed the ball and measured how long it took for the mattress to fully recover its shape.

The Helix Midnight mattress took almost 0.9 seconds for response time, this is an average response time for hybrids. This comes from the slow-to-respond memory foam on the top of the mattress’s layers.

This means that the mattress may not be so easy to move around on for some sleepers. However, it is not to the extent that one would feel uncomfortable as this is still a hybrid mattress.

The Helix Midnight mattress rates a 4/5 on our responsiveness test.

Motion Isolation

To test that, we placed a glass half full of water on top of the mattress and dropped a 20-pound ball on the other side. The water did not move much during the test, which indicates the mattress's ability to absorb motion fairly.

We also conducted another test to see how well the mattress would isolate motion from a partner. We had one person lie on one side of the mattress while the other person rolled around on the other side. The person lying still reported that they did not feel a lot of movement on the side of the mattress.

The Helix Midnight performed well in our motion isolation test. Since this mattress is a hybrid, the result is mainly because of its slow-moving memory foam, which minimizes the transmission of mission as it absorbs movements and isolates them, preventing them from reaching the other side. This is beneficial for couples, as they will not get sleep disruptions from the frequent changes of positions of one another.

The Helix Midnight mattress scored a 3.9/5 on our motion isolation test.

Edge Support

A mattress with solid edge support allows you to sit on the edge of the bed or lay on it without it compressing excessively or making them feel like they will roll off.

Helix Midnight mattress

We tested the edge support of the Helix Midnight by applying pressure to the edges and monitoring the mattress for levels of compression. We felt sufficient counterpressure from the layers, and the edges did spring back into shape when we removed the pressure.

We also sat on the edges of the mattress and felt it sink in slightly, but we did not get any roll-off sensation from doing so.

The Helix Midnight mattress felt sturdy when it came to edge support, as it provided a stable platform to sit or lay down on. This ensures the longevity of the mattress and the fact that it is not prone to sagging.

In terms of edge support performance, we rate the Helix Midnight mattress 4.8/5.

Noise

Noise performance in a mattress is very important, especially for those who are sensitive to sound disturbances during sleep.

We conducted a noise test on the Helix Midnight mattress by dropping a 20-pound ball onto it. We used highly sensitive microphones to listen for any squeaks or noises, but we didn't hear anything. The only sound we heard was the usual thud that the drop makes on any surface.

Usually, the noise generated by the coil springs can be a concern in some mattresses. However, the Helix Midnight combines memory foam and individually pocketed coils for both comfort and reduced noise. This makes it an ideal choice for sleepers who prioritize a quiet sleep environment during the night.

The Helix Midnight scores a 5/5 on our standard noise performance test.

Sex

It is important to note that the sex performance of a mattress is based on a few factors such as noise, edge support, cooling, and bounce. The Helix Midnight mattress performs excellently in all of them.

The bounce levels in this mattress are moderate, which allows for ease of movement and changes in positions. This makes the Helix Midnight a great mattress for intimate activities and can improve sex performance for couples by facilitating motion and providing good edge support, leaving you with a well-supported surface.

Although, this mattress includes memory foam in its construction which can lack the needed bounce for sexual activity, the reinforced coils offset this by giving it the necessary bounce and support that it lacks on its own.

We rate the Helix Midnight mattress a 4.5/5 in terms of sex performance.

Pressure Relief

Pressure relief is important to consider in a mattress, as it maintains a pain-free sleep experience by preventing discomfort and spinal misalignment. Good pressure relief promotes sleep quality, conforms to the body’s shape, and reduces pain in critical areas of the body.

We used a pressure map to test and evaluate the mattress’s ability to reduce pressure in certain areas of the body by visualizing the pressure distribution. The results showed the following:

Helix Midnight mattress pressure map

  • Back Region: The pressure displayed a consistent blue color on the map for the back region. This means that the mattress showed excellent pressure relief, which is important for maintaining spinal alignment and providing lumbar support, making it a beneficial feature for those who suffer from back pain.
  • Shoulders Region: For the shoulder area, we saw a consistent blue color on the pressure map. The memory foam played a role in reducing pressure on the shoulders with its body contouring abilities. This is sufficient for the vast majority of side sleepers.
  • Hips Region: The hip region showed reduced pressure with a mix of blue and mostly green colors. Although we don’t believe it will provide the needed support for stomach sleepers.

The Helix Midnight mattress showed great pressure relief in all areas tested, with the exception of the hip area. The majority of sleepers will find this mattress suitable for their needs, except for stomach sleepers, as they may have to deal with issues regarding increased pressure, pain, and discomfort.

The Helix Midnight rates a 4.5/5 on our pressure relief performance test.
