Unboxing the Helix Sunset Elite Mattress

The unboxing process of the Helix Sunset Elite was different than usual, to say the least. The mattress shipped in compressed in two separate boxes; One contained the encase support base of the bed, and the other was for the comfort layers. This division reduced the overall weight of each box, which makes it easy for you to handle and lift on your own without any external help.

We unpacked the support base and unrolled it onto our sleeping surface, and then we allowed it to fully expand for almost an hour. Next, we placed the comfort insert above the support base with the zipper side facing towards it. After zipping both layers together, we gave the Helix Sunset Elite another hour to inflate to its shape. The edges did not take long afterward to recover back to their original form. Indicating excellent corner expansion.

The off-gassing process went as smoothly as we expected. We didn't notice any strong off-gassing, this is because the mattress is GREENGUARD Gold certified which means it contains low levels of volatile organic compounds resulting in the emission of less intense odours.

To perform our standard cooling test, we lie down on the mattress for 20 minutes, allowing the bed to absorb body heat, and then measure the mattress’s temperature.

The Helix Sunset Elite felt cool during our test and did not feel warm at any point. The GlacioTex Elite technology in the pillow top cover of this mattress works to withdraw body heat away from the mattress and regulate temperature.

This mattress comes with a system of individually wrapped coils that create air channels to allow a ton of airflow and provide you with a comfortable and cool sleeping surface.

Responsiveness

For our responsiveness test, we use a 20-pound ball. Once fully rested, we measure how long the mattress takes to recover back to its original shape.

The Helix Sunset Elite mattress lasted around 0.3 seconds to fully retain its shape. This is faster than the average response time of 0.4 seconds, which refers to the great responsiveness performance of this mattress.

Motion Isolation

For the first test, we placed a glass of water on one side of the bed and dropped a 20-pound ball on the other to see how much the water moved around. With the Helix Sunset Elite bed, the water sloshed around slightly, which indicated the mattress did absorb motion, but not ideally.

In the second test, one person lay on the mattress while another rolled and moved around on the other side of the bed. The person lying at rest on the other side reported that they felt a notable amount of movement.

While this mattress's high responsiveness offers excellent bounce and support, it may not be the best choice for couples or light sleepers sensitive to partner movement. Individuals seeking superior motion isolation might find firmer or pure memory foam mattresses to be a better fit for their needs.

Edge Support

To test the edge support of the mattress, we applied firm pressure to the edges and felt no counterpressure and minimal support from the layers. When we released the pressure, the edges took quite some time to spring back into shape.

When sitting on the edge of the mattress, we noticed a slight give, sinking a little. However, it still provided enough support to feel comfortable and secure, without any concerns about falling off.

While the Helix Sunset Elite's plush comfort is ideal for some sleepers, its softer firmness profile may not provide the edge support desired by all, particularly those who prefer to sit or sleep close to the edge of the bed. For individuals who prioritize strong edge support, exploring firmer mattresses might offer a better experience.

Noise

Our standard noise test is conducted by dropping a 20-pound ball onto the mattress. We then use sensitive microphones to monitor and listen for any noises or squeaks.

Mattresses that emit noises and cause disturbance are mostly hybrid ones due to their inclusion of coils. However, with the Helix Sunset Elite, this is not an issue. It did not produce any noises and we heard nothing while executing our noise test.
