Kevin Pearcebegan and his brother Tony. Their ultimate goal is to provide maximum comfort to all types of sleepers and ensure a pain-free experience for all their shoppers.

With its cutting-edge materials and creative design, the Purple Mattress radically redefines what it means to sleep. The exclusive Hyper-Elastic Polymer Grid in this memory foam mattress provides unparalleled support, pressure relief, and airflow for a more comfortable, cooler night's sleep.

In this review, we will test the Purple mattress, specifically regarding:

  • Pros and cons.
  • Unboxing experience.
  • Feel and comfort.
  • Construction and design.
  • Performance test results.
  • Warranty policies, company policies, and all the FAQs you should know.

Purple Mattress Overview

Pros

  • Versatile: It is comfortable for all sleepers as it relieves pain and pressure on all body areas.
  • Hypoallergenic: This is because the fabric consists of an open coil core, cotton, and GelFlex® Grid Plus. There is no evidence that these materials cause allergies. This is why it’s the perfect choice for those who have asthma or allergies.
  • Luxurious: A combination of premium materials gives the Purple mattress exceptional comfort and support. The review will go into greater detail on the particular materials that went into making the mattress.
  • Pressure Relief: The GelFlex® grid of this mattress improves pressure relief. The cover controls warmth, the core offers support, and the grid shapes the body.
  • Durability: The Purple Mattress is a long-lasting mattress with exceptional durability. A 10-year warranty is included, and it is constructed with premium materials.

Cons

  • The GelFlex feel: The GelFlex grid layer gives the mattress a unique, polarising feel that you will either adore or find too distinctive for your tastes.

Who do we recommend the purple mattress for:

  • For those who frequently have hip, back, or shoulder pain: the Purple mattress is an excellent choice for those who often experience these types of problems. By adapting to the contours of the body, the GelFlex® Grid relieves pressure at strategic locations. This could decrease discomfort and enhance the quality of sleep.
  • For average and light-weight sleepers: Laying on the purple mattress happens to feel like sleeping on a cloud but still feels like enough support, and that is due to its medium-firm feel, which makes it perfect for all sleeping positions if you’re a lightweight or average-weight sleeper.

Unboxing the Purple mattress

Purple is aware of how crucial the unpacking process is to the customer journey. For this reason, they go to significant lengths to ensure that the procedure is seamless, exceptional, trouble-free, and meets the highest standards.

With Purple's "white glove" delivery service, the mattress will be delivered to your home, unpacked, and placed on your bed by them. For those who would rather not go through the trouble of unpacking and putting up a mattress themselves, this is a fantastic service.

Your purple mattress will be delivered compressed, folded up, and stored in a purple plastic tube featuring easy-to-carry handles and an opening tool. You will need a companion who can help you because the mattress is heavy, making it difficult to unroll and put up on your own.

Upon unboxing the mattress, it expanded fully in about 30 minutes. The edges also fluffed up nicely and felt sturdy. This indicates great corner expansion.

The purple mattress comes with a lighter smell than other mattresses, which is the smell of a new mattress called off-gassing, which happens to disappear from the purple mattress within less than 24 hours, and it usually takes about 4 days to disappear from other mattresses.

Firmness, Feel, and Comfort of the purple mattress

The Purple Mattress Firmness

On a scale of 1 to 10, the Purple Plus bed offers a firmness profile of 6.5. This indicates that this mattress is medium-firm. The comfort foam they added just below the purple grid layer and the edge-support foam noticeably lower the mattress's firmness grade, causing it to tilt more toward the medium-soft end of the hardness spectrum.

Purple mattress firmness

Given that side sleepers, back sleepers, and combination sleepers typically want medium-firm beds, this will fit them nicely. After all, your body weight affects how firm a mattress feels. It will feel somewhat firmer if you're a light sleeper. But if you're a heavyweight sleeper, we'd advise getting a firmer mattress.

The Purple Mattress Feel

The top cover of the mattress is elastic, giving it a supple and luxurious feel. In addition, the cover has antibacterial properties that prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi. The mattress provides a cool, dry feel that would be perfect for overheated sleepers because of its breathable components.

reviewer sleeping on Purple mattress

The mattress feels distinct because of the purple grid that is incorporated into it. The gel-like substance is arranged in a grid, so you may experience that unique texture. Some people may find it polarising, but that's where the trial period comes in; it lets you determine whether or not this is the best mattress for you.

The purple bed provides excellent pressure relief for side sleepers by molding to the contours of your shoulders and hips. If you sleep on your back, the Purple Plus mattress will make you feel weightless.

The Purple Mattress Comfort

Much like firmness, your body weight and preferred sleeping position will determine how comfortable your mattress is.

The purple mattress provides extra pressure relief, high responsiveness, comfort, and aids with temperature regulation.

We conducted several tests to see how the mattress performed in terms of comfort for various body weights and sleeping positions.

For the great majority of users, the mattress provided good comfort.

Constructions, Materials, and Design

Materials and Design

The Purples mattress is made of premium materials that offer excellent pressure relief and a comfortable sleeping environment.

It has a breathable material called the Soft Flex cover. Underneath it is the GelFlex grid, which gives purple mattresses their unique texture by creating a grid-like structure that diffuses air and conforms to the contours of your body.

The Purple bed also has an edge support foam layer that makes the bed more secure and extends its life and a memory foam layer that provides comfort and softens the mattress's firmness level. Lastly, the mattress is more durable since the dual base foams are a foundation for the other layers.

Layers

Purple mattress layers

Here's what’s inside the 9”25 purple mattress:

  1. Soft Flex Cover: made from 98% polyester and 2% spandex, this cover maximizes the GelFlex grid underneath it and is incredibly breathable. It eases you into bed and prevents body heat from building up as you sleep, making you feel cool.
  2. 2" Gelflex Grid: Also referred to as the purple grid, this is the top layer made of hyperelastic polymer, a soft, gel-like material that ultimately offers support. Its grid-like structure encourages airflow, letting heat from your body escape while holding none at all, and it adjusts quickly to your body's position.
  3. Edge Support Foam: The mattress is more durable and supported by the edge support layer. It makes it easier to get in and out of bed by removing the feeling of being stuck.
  4. 3"5 Premium Comfort Foam: Made from polyurethane foam, this incredibly soft foam isolates motion, relieves pressure points, and reduces the firmness profile of the mattress, making it among Purple's softest products. It has additional responsive comfort as well.
  5. 4" Base Support Foam: Consists of 74% polyester and 26% acrylic latex polyurethane foam. The foundation foam provides excellent support with reduced bounce and helps to stabilize the comfort layers above.

Performance of The Purple Mattress

Cooling

We lie down on the mattress for 20 minutes to allow the bed to absorb body heat before measuring the temperature of the mattress to conduct our standard cooling test.

The Purple mattress operates well in terms of cooling. We detected little to no heat accumulation throughout our test, nor did we feel any significant heat retention around the body.

This is most likely the result of the elastic polymer grid losing heat more quickly than memory foam does. In addition, there is plenty of space for airflow thanks to the purple grid pattern.

We rate the cooling performance of the Purple mattress at 4.5 out of 5.

Responsiveness

We use a 20-pound ball for our responsiveness test. We track how long it takes the mattress to recover and regain its normal shape.

The Purple mattress had great responsiveness during our test, taking only 0.5 seconds to recover fully.

The mattress has a unique sensation that is exclusive to purple mattresses because of the sensitive and flexible material used to create the purple grid. It has an incredibly quick response. If you're a combination sleeper, this is ideal because it helps with your movement between positions during the night.

As a result, the Purple mattress's responsiveness rating is 4.7 out of 5.

Motion Isolation

Because it keeps sleeping partners from waking each other up during the night, lower motion transfer is seen as preferable. We run two tests to assess how well the bed absorbs movement between mattresses in terms of motion isolation.

In the first test, we see how much the water moves by placing a glass of water on one side of the bed and dropping a 20-pound ball on the other.

The Purple's motion transfer results are great. We also didn't notice any excessive splashing of the water, so we believe this mattress does a great job of isolating motion. Even if you or your partner are light sleepers, it's doubtful that you'll sense their movements.

In the second test, one individual rolled over and shifted on one side of the bed while the other lay on the mattress. On the other side, the person who was at rest reported feeling very little movement.

With a score of 4.5 out of 5 in our motion isolation performance test, the Purple mattress offers excellent motion isolation.

Edge Support

The strength of the bed's outer borders determines how well a mattress supports the edges of the mattress. The better, the less it compresses and sinks.

We put firm pressure on the edges of the mattress to evaluate its edge support, and we were able to feel enough support and counterpressure from the layers. The edges promptly returned to their original shape after we released the pressure.

Additionally, we were able to feel our weights slightly—but not significantly—sink as we sat on the bed's borders. For those who prefer to sit or sleep on the side of the bed, or even for heavy sleepers, this may not be the best solution.

In the edge support performance test, we can claim that the Purple mattress received a score of 4 out of 5.

Noise

The noise level of a mattress should be taken into account while making the decision. If you're a couple or a light sleeper, it's even more important. Making a lot of noise when getting in and out of bed at night can keep your partner awake.

We perform our usual noise test by putting a 20-pound ball on the mattress. We then listen for any disturbances or squeaks using sensitive microphones.

The Purple Bed received a score of 5/5 for its noise performance test because it did not produce any noise.

Sex

It's crucial to understand that a mattress should have the optimal amount of bounce, cooling, edge support, and noise reduction for comfortable sexual fulfillment.

The purple bed has a lot of bounce, and more bounce than any other feature improves total sex performance. The purple bed, on the other hand, provides essential edge support. This mattress provides adequate cooling and doesn't make any noise.

In terms of sex performance, we rate the Purple Bed a 4.8 out of 5.

Pressure Relief

We assess the mattress's ability to relieve pressure by looking at its performance in various sleeping positions.

During our pressure relief test, we lie on the bed and use pressure mapping technology to assess the pressure levels throughout our body.

An illustration of our findings is shown below; the more blue, the better. We address three main types of pain: hip, shoulder, and back.

Before viewing the findings below, think about how you sleep. If you sleep on your side and experience shoulder and hip pain, you should look for a mattress that shows little to no pressure accumulation.

Purple mattress pressure relief

We observed nearly no pressure rise in any of the sleeping positions. The map image is all blue. The Purple ought to be an excellent mattress for shoulder, hip, and back problems as a result.

The grid layer does a wonderful job of cradling the body. It effectively relieved pressure on the shoulders and hips, mostly. There was no obvious development of pressure points.

In our pressure relief test, the purple mattress received a score of 5 out of 5.

FAQs about Purple Mattress

Is a purple mattress a good investment?

Purple mattresses are more distinctive than those of any of Purple's rivals. It might be worthwhile if you're willing to try something new—a mattress that feels nearly like floating—and if the price fits within your budget.

What is used to make purple mattresses?

Purple's unique hyper-elastic polymer substance is its key selling point. It relieves pressure and is elastic, gel-like, and supporting. Regular foam, the kind used in many mattresses that come in a box, is included in the lower layers.

Is a box spring required when using a purple mattress?

No, your Purple mattress does not require a box spring. Use a standard bed frame instead, like a flat, adjustable, metal, or slatted wood foundation.
