Stason Strong and Brad Hall, two business partners and friends who are passionate about sleep, founded SONU after realizing that the traditional flat mattress design was not ideal for sleep.

After extensive research and development, they created a unique mattress that allows sleepers to fully immerse their arms into the bed.

The SONU Sleep System does precisely that. Its patented Comfort Channel design cradles your arms and shoulders, reducing pressure and improving circulation for a more comfortable and restful sleep.

SONU Sleep system

In this review, we will test the SONU Sleep System mattress, specifically regarding:

  • Pros and cons.
  • Unboxing experience.
  • Feel and comfort.
  • Construction and design.
  • Performance test results.
  • Warranty policies, company policies, and all the FAQs you might want to know.

Note: This review will focus on the plush model of the mattress, as we believe it is the most versatile and suitable option for most people.

However, we will also be discussing which model would suit you best throughout the review.

SONU Sleep System Overview

Pros

  • Patented Comfort Channel Design: The Comfort Channel design is the most essential feature of the SONU Sleep System. It has a unique design that cradles your arms and shoulders, reducing pressure and improving circulation. This is especially beneficial for side sleepers, who are more likely to experience pressure points on their shoulders and arms.
  • Two Firmness Options: The SONU Sleep System comes in two firmness options: plush and firm. The plush model is a good choice for light sleepers, while the firm model is a good choice for heavy sleepers.
  • Spinal alignment: The SONU Sleep System is designed to align your spine while you sleep, especially for side sleepers. The Comfort Channel design allows your shoulders to sink in, which helps level the vertebrae in your neck and upper back. The upper torso is also supported, while the hips sink in to level the vertebrae in your lower back. This helps to reduce tension, improve breathing, and promote sound sleep throughout the night.
  • Durable: The SONU Sleep System is made with high-quality materials that are designed to last. The mattress also has a 10-year warranty, which is a testament to its durability.
  • Luxurious: The SONU Sleep System is made with high-quality materials, including foam that is designed to provide comfort and support. The mattress is also quilted with a soft, breathable fabric that feels luxurious against your skin.

Cons

  • Pricey: The SONU Sleep System is more expensive than some other mattresses on the market. However, it is important to note that the mattress is made with high-quality materials and features innovative technology.
  • Requires Special Bedsheets: The SONU Sleep System has a unique Comfort Channel design that creates a space for your arms and shoulders to rest. This can make it difficult to use regular bedsheets, as they may not fit snugly into the channel. However, the SONU Sleep System comes with a free set of special bedsheets that are designed to fit into the Comfort Channel and provide support for your arms and shoulders.

Who do we Recommend the SONU Sleep System for

  • Side sleepers: The Comfort Channel design is especially beneficial for side sleepers, who are more likely to experience pressure points on their shoulders and arms. The mattress also comes in two firmness options, so you can choose the one that is right for you.
  • Heavy sleepers: The SONU Sleep System has a firm model that is designed for heavy sleepers. This model will provide you with the support you need without sinking too deeply.
  • Couples: The SONU Sleep System is a good choice for couples who want to cuddle comfortably without feeling cramped or experiencing arm or shoulder pressure. The multiple layers of the SONU Support Pillows provide support and comfort for both partners.
  • If you Like to Use your Phone or Read Before Bed: The SONU Sleep System will be ideal for you because it provides ergonomic support with its Comfort Channel design. The Comfort Channel allows you to rest your hand comfortably while using your phone or reading, reducing pressure on your shoulder and hand. The sides of the Comfort Channel also act as hand supports, reducing hand and wrist tension.

Unboxing the SONU Sleep System

When you spend money on a high-end mattress, you expect a luxurious unboxing experience. SONU delivers on that promise with their SONU Sleep System. Your mattress is delivered compressed and rolled in a box for an easy installation process.

To unbox your mattress, first cut open the box. Inside, you will find a welcome kit that includes a pamphlet, a unique SONU cutting tool, your free bedsheets, and, of course, the mattress itself along with the comfort pillows.

Once you have your rolled mattress out of the box, place it on a sturdy surface, such as your bed frame or the floor. The mattress is heavy but still manageable on your own. Carefully cut through the plastic with the cutting tool, and the mattress will instantly start to expand. The corners will also expand quickly, indicating great corner expansion. However, it may take a few minutes for the mattress to fully fluff up. You can still sleep on it the same day.

You may notice a slight odor when you first unbox the mattress. This is common with most bed-in-a-box mattresses. However, this smell is not a chemical smell, as all the materials are environmentally friendly and free of harmful chemicals. The smell should dissipate completely within a few hours and is not harmful.

Firmness, Feel, and Comfort For SONU Sleep System

SONU Sleep System Firmness

Firmness is one of the most important factors to consider when choosing a mattress. Your weight, sleeping style, and personal preferences all play a role in determining the right firmness for you.

The SONU Sleep System offers two firmness options to accommodate a wide range of needs: a plush model, which is a 4 on our firmness scale, and a firm model, which is an 8 on our firmness scale.

SONU Sleep system firmness scale

Here is a simple table to help you determine which firmness is right for you. If you're still not sure, you can always take advantage of SONU Sleep System's 100-night sleep trial.

SONU Sleep System Feel

When you first lay on the SONU Sleep System, the soft, luxurious-looking cover greets you with its cool and inviting touch.

The cover is made of a special fabric that stretches to accommodate any extra space required by your immersed shoulders and arms.

Our reviewers taking a nap on the SONU Sleep System in our studio

The comfort channel draws you in, strategically placed to cradle your shoulders and neck. The comfort pillows are also adjustable, so you can customize the feel of the mattress to your liking.

As you sink into the mattress, the all-foam construction gently embraces you. The foam is firm enough to provide support but soft enough to cushion your body. The tension in your muscles melts away as you relax into the mattress.

The more you lay on the mattress, the more you start to appreciate the perfect balance of cushioning and support. You feel like you are floating on a cloud, but you are also supported in all the right places.

SONU Sleep System Comfort

The SONU Sleep System is designed with comfort in mind, especially for side sleepers. If you are a side sleeper, you can expect to experience excellent comfort on the SONU Sleep System.

However, it should be comfortable for other sleeping styles, as you can choose to use or not use the comfort channel. Also, you can fill in the comfort channel with the SONU Comfort Insert, which makes the mattress more akin to a flat mattress.

This versatility can be helpful for couples who sleep differently or for those who prefer less space in the comfort channel.

We wanted to get a better sense of the mattress's comfort, so we had our reviewers with different sleeping styles and weights test the plush model. The table below summarizes our findings.

Constructions, Materials, and Design

Materials and Design

The SONU Sleep System mattress is made of 26 pieces of premium, high-resilience CertiPUR-US®-certified flexible polyurethane viscoelastic foam that is 14 inches thick. This means that it is environmentally friendly and approved as a safe household product.

By now, you have probably gotten a good idea of the unique design of this mattress, which includes the comfort channel and comfort pillows that provide a superior sleep experience. And let's not forget the dark gray color scheme, which gives it a luxurious and sleek finish.

Layers

The SONU Sleep System is not constructed like a traditional flat mattress with consecutive layers. Instead, it has a unique construction design that consists of the following components:

  1. Support Pillows: These pillows are the key to the unique immersive support system. They are made of a special foam that is laterally malleable while maintaining ideal vertical support. This allows them to perfectly support the sleeper's upper torso while relieving pressure on the limbs.
  2. Comfort Channel: This is the patented feature that allows sleepers to fully immerse themselves in the bed. It is a 10-inch-deep negative space that is perfectly designed to cradle the body and align the spine.
  3. Air Tech Layers: This layer is made of Serene® foam, which is a type of foam that allows air to flow while not being temperature sensitive. This means that it maintains its top level of comfort throughout the night, even if you get hot or sweaty. The Air Tech Layers also allow for different support sections to be blended seamlessly into one, providing the proper support under the upper torso while allowing the hips to sink to align the spine.
  4. Channel Support: This layer is made up of three outer walls that create the optimal shape of negative space needed to allow the sleeper's limbs to fully immerse below the surface. The side structures also act as hand supports when holding a device or book.
  5. Upper Torso Relief Layer: The SONU Sleep System is engineered to provide a unique level of comfort by supporting the upper torso while allowing the shoulders and arms to immerse into the bed. This is achieved through a gradation of support that reduces the weight normally required by these areas.
  6. Sink Support: This layer is designed to align the spine while side sleeping, enabling reduced tension, better breathing, and sound sleep throughout the night.
  7. Cooling Cover: This layer is made of a PCM, or phase change material, that ablates heat away from the sleeper, so it is cool to the touch and helps regulate temperatures throughout the night. It is also stretchy to accommodate any extra space required by the immersed shoulders and arms.

Performance of SONU Sleep System

Cooling

The SONU Sleep System is designed to be cool and comfortable, even for hot sleepers and couples. The cooling cover is made of a phase change material (PCM) that absorbs heat and releases it slowly, helping to regulate body temperature throughout the night.

The Air Tech Layers are also made of breathable foam that allows air to flow freely, preventing heat buildup. Additionally, the Comfort Channel and Support Pillows help to keep the sleeper's body evenly distributed, which also helps to prevent overheating.

We conducted a cooling performance test on the SONU Sleep System mattress by lying on it for 20 minutes and monitoring its heat retention. The cool, soft fabric of the cover felt good against our skin in the first few minutes. As we lay there, the mattress conformed to our bodies, but we didn't feel any excessive heat build-up.

For an all-foam mattress, it was pretty cool and comfortable, so we gave it a 4.6/5 for cooling performance.

Responsiveness

The SONU Sleep System is designed to reduce motion transfer, which means that it may not be the most responsive mattress. Our testing, however, shows that it still has good responsiveness performance.

Our reviewers taking a nap on the SONU Sleep System in our studio

We tested the responsiveness of the SONU Sleep System by placing a 20-pound ball on the mattress and waiting a few seconds for the ball to settle. Then we removed the ball and monitored how quickly the mattress recovered. The mattress fully recovered in about 1.3 seconds, which is a good responsiveness score.

The SONU Sleep System did pretty well in our responsiveness test, despite being an all-foam mattress. You’ll not feel stuck on this mattress, and that is why we gave it a 4.2/5 for responsiveness.

If you are looking for a more responsive feel, you might prefer the firm model of this mattress.

Motion Isolation

The SONU Sleep System has viscoelastic foam that is similar to memory foam when it comes to its ability to conform to the body, reducing motion transfer. This is important for couples who share a bed, as it can help prevent one person's movements from disturbing the other person's sleep.

To test how well the SONU Sleep System can isolate motion, we conducted two tests. In the first test, we placed a glass of water on the mattress and dropped a 20-pound ball on the other side. The water did not move or slosh around.

In the second test, we had one person lie down on one side of the mattress while another person rolled around on the other side. The person lying still did not feel any movement on the side of the mattress.

These two tests demonstrate that the SONU Sleep System has excellent motion isolation. This is why we gave this mattress a 5/5 regarding motion isolation.

Edge Support

Edge support is important for people who sleep on the edge of the mattress or sit by the edge. The SONU Sleep System has good edge support despite not having any springs. This is because the mattress is made with a combination of foams that are designed to provide support and stability.

We tested the edge support of the SONU Sleep System by applying firm pressure to the edges and monitoring for counterpressure. We felt sufficient counterpressure from the layers, and the edges did spring back into shape when we removed the pressure. However, it was easier to push more on the edges near the comfort channel.

When we sat on the edges of the mattress, we felt our weight sink in and cause a slight dip. However, we did not feel like we would roll off the edge.

Overall, we were impressed with the edge support of the SONU Sleep System. We gave it a 4.5/5 for edge support. If you are looking for a mattress with better edge support, we recommend the firm model of this mattress.

Noise

Noise isolation is important for people who share a bed, as moving around on the mattress can make noise that can disturb the other person. The SONU Sleep System is expected to be silent thanks to its all-foam construction.

We conducted a noise test on the SONU Sleep System by dropping a 20-pound ball onto it. We used highly sensitive microphones to listen to any noises, but we didn't hear anything. The only sound we heard was the typical thud a drop makes on any surface.

This is because the all-foam construction of the mattress absorbs sound well. There are no springs or other hard materials that can make noise when they are moved.

Overall, the SONU Sleep System has excellent noise isolation. We gave it a 5/5 regarding noise.

Sex

The SONU Sleep System has the right balance of bounce, cooling, and edge support. The slightly bouncy surface makes it easy to move around, and the viscoelastic foam provides traction so you don't slide around.

The edge support is also decent, so you can make full use of the bed. However, some couples may find that the softer feel causes them to sink during sex, which can limit movements. If this is a concern, you can choose the firm model of the mattress.

Overall, the SONU Sleep System is a good mattress for sex and received a rating of 4.6/5 in this category.

Pressure Relief

Pressure relief is one of the major concerns for most sleepers, especially those who do sports or simply value a good night's sleep.

The SONU Sleep System is designed to relieve pressure for side sleepers, especially those who do sports or simply value a good night's sleep. It has also been recommended by chiropractors.

To evaluate how the SONU Sleep System performs in different sleeping positions, we conducted our standard pressure relief test.

Our test involves resting on the mattress for 20 minutes and then measuring the pressure in different body zones. The pressure map below shows the results of the test.

SONU Sleep system pressure map

As you can see, the map is totally blue for the side sleeping position, thanks to the comfort channel and the layer specifically designed to provide upper torso relief.

This means that there are no pressure points on the body, which is important for side sleepers as they tend to put more pressure on their shoulders and hips.

The stomach and back sleeping positions also seem okay, with only a little bit of green on the map. This is normal for most mattresses, especially considering that the SONU Sleep System is a plush mattress.

Overall, the SONU Sleep System does an excellent job of relieving pressure and earned a solid 4.8/5 for pressure relief.

FAQs about SONU Sleep System

Will my arm become numb in the Comfort Channel?

When a body part "falls asleep", it is due to a lack of circulation. This can happen when you sleep on a traditional flat mattress and your arm is forced into an unnatural position, which cuts off circulation.

The Comfort Channel in the SONU Sleep System is designed to prevent arm numbness, relieve pressure on the arms, and improve circulation. This is because the channel allows the arms to rest below the heart, which is the natural position for the arms when you are awake.

Do I need to use the SONU Sheets for my SONU Sleep System?

Yes, the SONU Sleep System mattress' unique shape requires custom-fit SONU sheets. These sheets are designed to fit the mattress perfectly, providing a comfortable and secure sleep experience.

Is the SONU Sleep System safe?

The SONU Sleep System uses flexible foam that has been independently certified by CertiPUR-US®, a third-party organization that tests and certifies foam for safety and environmental impact. The CertiPUR-US® certification means that the SONU Sleep Foam is free from harmful chemicals and gases, including ozone-depleting chemicals, PBDE flame retardants, mercury, lead, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. The foam is also low in VOC emissions, which means it is safe for indoor air quality.

Is the SONU Sleep System made of memory foam?

No, the SONU Sleep System is made of viscoelastic foam, which is a type of foam that is similar to memory foam. However, viscoelastic foam is more responsive than memory foam, meaning that it takes less time to return to its original shape after being compressed. This makes viscoelastic foam a good choice for people who want a mattress that is comfortable and supportive but does not feel too soft or too firm.

Is the SONU Sleep System suitable for kids under the age of 12?

No, the SONU Sleep System is not suitable for kids under the age of 12. The mattress is designed for side sleepers and adults, and it may be too firm for children. Additionally, the mattress is not designed to accommodate the growth and development of children.
