Sealy delivers its mattresses compressed in a box, and the FlexGrid mattress was no exception. When the box arrived to us, we found that it could be easy to carry by two people. To unbox it, you simply place it on your bed, carefully cut the plastic wrap, and leave it to fully expand.

The mattress took around 24 hours to fully expand to its full size, so you should wait until it expands to sleep on it. As for edge expansion, the mattress’ edges are considered adequate, so you may not feel well-supported if you decide to sleep or sit near the edges.

Like most bed-in-a-box beds, the Sealy FlexGrid mattress released a potent off-gassing smell when it was unboxed. However, the smell disappeared after subjecting the mattress to strong airflow for a couple of days. Such strong off-gassing odor indicates that the mattress has strong chemicals, which may be an issue for people who want a mattress that prioritizes their comfort as well as their well-being.

Overall, we found it easy to unbox and set up the Sealy FlexGrid mattress, but if you don’t want a mattress that releases a strong off-gassing odor, then you may want to look somewhere else.

The comfort of any mattress also depends on your body weight, preferred sleeping position, and firmness of the mattress. The Sealy FlexGrid mattress comes in two models: Foam and Hybrid. The two models have a medium-firm feel, so they should feel comfortable for most sleepers.

For back and stomach sleepers, the Hybrid model would be very comfortable, as the combination between foam and coils would support those folks, and prevent them from sagging too much. Yet, even the hybrid model of the Sealy FlexGrid can’t support heavy sleepers due to having weak coils in its construction.

Similarly, light and average-weight side sleepers should get adequate comfort from the Foam version of the Sealy FlexGrid, as memory foam would properly cushion their pressure points. However, side sleepers who weigh more than 250 pounds would sink too much, which would lead to shoulder and hip pain.

The Sealy FlexGrid is made with average-quality materials, similar to those found in cheaper mattresses. This makes it less supportive and less durable than other mattresses, especially for heavy sleepers. we highly recommend the Layla Hybrid mattress, which is suitable for all sleepers, regardless of body weight.

Cooling

If you sleep hot or dislike a warm mattress, good cooling performance is essential.

We did two tests to assess the Sealy FlexGrid mattress’ cooling performance. The first test consists of sleeping on each side for a 20-minute nap. When we did this test, we found that the mattress kept a neutral temperature, regardless of the sleeping position.

Although Sealy markets the FlexGrid as a cooling mattress, we found that it does a decent job of maintaining a neutral temperature. However, it doesn’t provide above-average cooling performance that can satisfy hot sleepers, or those who live in warm areas.

If you are a hot sleeper who is looking for a mattress that has an excellent cooling performance, we recommend the PlushBeds Signature Bliss mattress.

Responsiveness

Responsiveness is essential for any mattress, as good responsiveness means that it is easy to move on the mattress without feeling stuck.

We tested the Sealy FlexGrid mattress’ responsiveness by placing a 20-pound ball onto its surface and then removing it. This test helps assess how quickly the mattress responds to pressure.

While doing this test we found that the mattress takes about 1.5 seconds to fully recover to its initial form. This didn’t come as a surprise to us, as the quality of the memory foam and coils used in this bed wouldn’t provide an exceptional responsiveness performance.

This means that this bed is not the best option for combination sleepers, as they might feel stuck in the bed and unable to move freely.

Motion Isolation

Mattresses with good motion isolation are ideal if you share your bed with a partner. We tested the FlexGrid mattress’ motion isolation performance by doing a couple of our standard tests.

The first test is that we put a glass of water on one side of the mattress, and dropped a 20 lb ball on the other side. This helps us examine how much motion is transferred to the glass of water. While doing this test, we found that the water glass was slightly affected by the ball drop.

The second test consists of rolling on one side of the mattress and having our partner report to us the motion propagated on the other side of the mattress. This test also indicated that the mattress transfers some movement, but not to the extent of causing sleep disruption.

Therefore, the Sealy FlexGrid mattress offers a good motion isolation performance, so it could work for partners who have different sleeping styles and don’t want to disturb each other while sleeping.

Edge Support

Edge support is important as it allows you to use the entire sleeping surface of your mattress and not feel like you will fall out of bed, which makes your bed feel bigger. It is something to look for in a new mattress if you tend to sleep right by the edges or share the mattress with a partner.

We ran our standard tests to evaluate the Sealy FlexGrid mattress’ edge support.

The first test we did consisted of applying pressure to the edges of the mattress and examining how much it compresses. The edges were easily compressed when pressure was applied.

The second test we did involved sitting on the mattress’ edges and seeing how well it holds body weight. When we did this test, we didn’t feel well-supported while sitting on the edges of the mattress.

Such weak edges would make you sleep towards the center of the mattress, which may cause the bed to sag quickly. It also wouldn’t allow you to sit on the edges of your bed, as you would feel that you would fall. If you are looking for a mattress with excellent edge support, we highly recommend the Layla Hybrid mattress.

We did our standard noise test to examine if the Sealy FlexGrid mattress causes any noises or squeaks. Our test consists of dropping a heavy ball on the surface of the mattress, and examining how much noise it causes through highly sensitive mics.

When we performed our noise test, we found the Sealy FlexGrid mattress within the “silent” mattresses category. This would make it a good option for those who are easily disrupted by noise.

Light-weight and average-weight back sleepers should feel comfortable on the medium-firm of this bed, as it would give them the needed support and fill their lumbar area. This would ease the pressure on their back and keep them in a good alignment. Heavy-weight back sleepers, however, would sink too much into the mattress, so a firmer bed is recommended for them.

Side sleepers, especially those with a light or average weight, should find it a decent option, as it would sink in the right places and hug their shoulders and hips, relieving the pressure off them. Yet, heavy-weight sleepers wouldn’t get the needed support from it, causing them to sink too much.

Similar to back sleepers, light and average-weight stomach sleepers should feel that sleeping on this bed keeps them in a good alignment, but if they are heavier than 250 lbs, it wouldn’t be a good match for them.
