IKEA mattresses are known for their budget-friendly pricing and accessibility, making them a popular choice for those looking to furnish a bedroom without breaking the bank. While they offer basic comfort and a range of firmness options, higher-quality alternatives are often available for those seeking advanced features, like enhanced support, cooling technology, or luxury materials.

The ASVANG mattress is designed to provide medium-firm support with a single layer of foam and a soft quilted cover. It’s a practical choice for those needing a basic mattress for guest rooms or short-term use, though it may lack the comfort and durability that frequent users or those with specific sleep needs might desire.

In this article, we will go through:

  • Pros and Cons
  • Who we recommend this mattress for
  • Unboxing Experience
  • Firmness, Feel, and Comfort
  • Mattress Layers
  • Warranty and Return Policies
  • FAQs
  • Final Verdict

ASVANG Mattress Overview

Pros

  • Budget-Friendly: The ASVANG mattress offers basic comfort and support at an affordable price, making it a practical choice for those on a budget.
  • Good for Back Sleepers: Its medium-firm foam layer provides adequate support for back sleepers who don’t need extensive contouring.
  • Easy to Maintain: With a removable, machine-washable cover, it’s simple to keep clean and fresh over time.

Cons

  • Lacks Sufficient Support: The single foam layer may not provide enough support for heavier individuals or those needing more structure for their spine and joints.
  • Better Options in the Same Price Range: For a similar cost, other brands offer mattresses with more layers, durability, or enhanced comfort features such as the Brooklyn Bedding Dreamfoam Essential.
  • No Cooling Technology: The ASVANG lacks any cooling technology, which may lead to overheating, especially for hot sleepers.
  • Limited Durability: Its basic construction and thinner profile may wear down faster, making it less ideal for long-term, daily use.
  • Minimal Pressure Relief: Side sleepers and those with pressure-sensitive areas might find it uncomfortable, as it doesn’t offer significant contouring for hips or shoulders.

Who we Recommend the ASVANG Mattress for

  • Those on a Budget: Ideal for shoppers seeking an affordable mattress option without unnecessary features.
  • Back Sleepers: The medium-firm foam provides a supportive surface that suits back sleepers who don’t require deep contouring.
  • Guest Rooms or Short-Term Use: Perfect for guest rooms or temporary sleeping setups, as it provides basic comfort at a low cost.
  • Students or Young Adults: A practical choice for students or young adults needing a simple, functional mattress for dorms or first apartments.
  • People with Limited Space: Its slim profile makes it easy to fit in smaller rooms or on bunk beds, making it a good choice for compact living spaces.

Unboxing the ASVANG Mattress

When we unboxed the ASVANG mattress, the whole process was surprisingly simple and convenient. It arrived compressed and rolled in plastic, making it easy for us to bring inside without wrestling with a bulky mattress. Once in the room, we carefully cut open the packaging, and the mattress immediately started to expand as soon as it was unwrapped.

Within minutes, it began taking shape, though we could see it would need a little more time to fully expand to its intended thickness. IKEA recommends letting it sit for up to 72 hours, so we set it on the bed frame and gave it time to settle. During this period, the foam gradually regained its form and firmness, readying itself for use.

We did notice a slight chemical smell upon first opening—common with foam mattresses. To help it air out, we left the windows open to speed up the process. After a day or two, the smell faded significantly, and the mattress was comfortable and fresh for sleeping.

Overall, the unboxing process was smooth and straightforward, making it easy for us to get the ASVANG mattress ready for use.

Firmness, Feel, and Comfort For ASVANG Mattress

ASVANG Mattress Firmness

Ikea Asvang Mattress Firmness Scale

On our firmness scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 the firmest, the ASVANG mattress falls around 6.5. This medium-firm rating provides a balanced level of support that works well for back sleepers but may feel too firm for those who prefer a softer, more cushioned surface.

ASVANG Mattress Feel

Lying on the ASVANG mattress, the first thing you notice is just how firm it feels. There’s a slight bit of cushioning from the quilted cover, but beyond that, it’s a very basic, flat surface with little give. For back sleepers, it might offer enough support, but for anyone who sleeps on their side or prefers a softer feel, it’s likely to feel too rigid and uncomfortable, especially around pressure points like the shoulders and hips.

Overall, it lacks the plushness or contouring you’d find in more premium mattresses, leaving you feeling like you're lying directly on a hard layer of foam.

ASVANG Mattress Comfort

We tested the mattress on different sleepers with different body weights. For side sleepers, the ASVANG mattress is likely to feel quite firm and uncomfortable, as it doesn’t provide much cushioning around the shoulders and hips. This lack of softness can lead to pressure buildup, making it hard to stay comfortable on your side for long periods.

Back sleepers may find the ASVANG somewhat more comfortable, as its firmness provides decent lower back support and keeps the spine relatively aligned. However, it still feels quite basic and doesn’t offer the contouring that some back sleepers might prefer for enhanced comfort.

Stomach sleepers, specifically lightweight sleepers, might feel a bit more comfortable on the ASVANG due to its firmness, which helps prevent the hips from sinking too deeply and maintains a more neutral spinal alignment.

These are the results of our testing summed up.

Constructions, Materials, and Design

Materials and Design

The ASVANG mattress is constructed with a single layer of medium-firm polyurethane foam, designed to provide basic support without any advanced comfort layers. It has a simple, removable cover made from recycled polyester with a quilted layer of wadding for a slight touch of cushioning.

Overall, the design is minimalist and functional, aimed more at affordability than luxurious comfort or high-end materials. We’d recommend the Avenco Gel Memory Foam mattress for better quality.

Layers

  1. Quilted Cover: The top layer is a removable, machine-washable cover made from 100% recycled polyester. This cover includes a thin layer of wadding (a mix of 70% viscose and 30% polyester) to add a small amount of cushioning, giving the surface a softer feel while protecting the foam core.
  2. Polyurethane Foam Core: The main layer of the mattress is a single, solid piece of medium-firm polyurethane foam with a density of 1.7 lb/cu.ft. This layer provides the primary support for the mattress, offering a firm and resilient surface but minimal contouring or pressure relief compared to memory foam or hybrid mattresses.

Performance of ASVANG Mattress

Cooling

The ASVANG mattress lacks specific cooling features, as it’s made from a single layer of basic polyurethane foam without any added cooling gel or breathable layers. Foam mattresses like this one tend to trap heat, which can lead to a warmer sleep experience, especially for those who naturally sleep hot. Without any ventilation or cooling technology, the ASVANG may not be ideal for maintaining a cool, comfortable temperature throughout the night.

To assess the cooling performance of the Ikea ASVANG Mattress, we examined its construction and conducted a heat retention test. In our heat retention test, we laid on the mattress for 20 minutes while monitoring how much heat it retained.

After the test, we found the mattress to retain some heat, especially in areas of direct body contact. It lacked the advanced cooling technologies seen in more premium mattresses, such as gel-infused foam or specialized cooling covers.

We gave the Ikea ASVANG a 2.5/5 on our cooling test because it lacks any form of cooling technology, which makes it very inconvenient for hot sleepers.

Responsiveness

The ASVANG mattress has a fairly low level of responsiveness due to its single, firm foam layer. It doesn’t contour closely to the body or adapt quickly to movement, making it feel quite stiff and static. This lack of responsiveness may be noticeable for combination sleepers who frequently change positions and prefer a mattress that adjusts to their movements.

We tested the IKEA ASVANG's responsiveness by placing a 20-pound weight on it, taking it off, and timing how quickly the mattress recovered back.

The ASVANG did an okay job in this test. The mattress showed slow responsiveness returning to its original form in about 1.7 seconds, which means that it wouldn’t feel easy tossing and turning around on this mattress.

For responsiveness, we rate the mattress a 2/5.

Motion Isolation

As a basic foam mattress, the ASVANG does provide some level of motion isolation, absorbing movement better than a traditional innerspring mattress. This can be beneficial for light sleepers who share a bed, as it helps reduce disturbances from a partner’s movements. However, its limited thickness and minimal comfort layers mean it may not isolate motion as effectively as thicker foam or hybrid mattresses designed specifically for that purpose.

By setting a glass of water on one side of the mattress and dropping a 20-pound weight on the other, we were able to test motion isolation. The water showed almost no movement when we lowered the weight, suggesting that the foam absorbed most of the motion.

For the second test, we also had one of our reviewers lie still on one side of the bed while the other reviewer was moving around to see how much movement they would feel, For light sleepers who are sensitive to movement, this mattress would be beneficial.

The ASVANG receives a score of 4/5 for motion isolation. For a low-cost mattress, it does fairly well.

Edge Support

The ASVANG mattress has minimal edge support due to its simple, single-layer foam construction. When sitting or lying near the edge, the foam compresses easily, causing a sinking sensation that makes the edge feel unstable. For those who like to use the full surface of their mattress, this lack of edge support may make the ASVANG feel restrictive and less durable over time.

In the first test, we applied firm pressure to the edges to see how much counter pressure we would be faced with, and we observed very little counter pressure, especially on the mattress's side.

In our second test, the sagging was more evident when having our reviewer sit and lay on the edge of the bed, which can be unpleasant for people who want to use the full space of their mattress, even though the edge support was sufficient when lying down.

Because of its poor performance, we rated the ASVANG a 2.5/5 on our edge support test.

Noise

One advantage of foam mattresses like the ASVANG is their generally quiet performance, as foam materials produce little to no noise. Since it has no springs or metal components, you won’t hear any creaking or squeaking when shifting positions. This quietness makes it a good option for light sleepers who are easily disturbed by sound.

We tested the mattress's noise level by placing a 20-pound weight on it and using sensitive microphones to listen for any squeaks or other noises.

The ASVANG did well in our noise test. During regular use, there were no audible squeaks or creaks from the pocket spring system. Anyone who moves around a lot at night, even couples, will benefit from this.

For noise, we gave the ASVANG a 5/5. For light sleepers or couples, it's a wonderful option for those who require a quiet mattress.

Sex

Due to its firm, unresponsive foam layer, the ASVANG may not be the best choice for sexual activity. The lack of bounce and minimal responsiveness makes it feel quite stiff, and it doesn’t provide the support or flexibility that couples might prefer.

Additionally, the edges may feel unstable, limiting the usable space during intimate activities.

For that, we gave the ASVANG a 2/5 for its sex performance.

Pressure Relief

The ASVANG mattress offers very basic pressure relief, which may not be sufficient for those with pressure-sensitive areas. The firm foam layer doesn’t contour much to the body, leaving areas like the shoulders and hips unsupported, especially for side sleepers.

For anyone looking for significant relief from pressure points, the ASVANG may feel too rigid and lacking in comfort. For better pressure relief on a budget, we’d recommend investing in the Bear Original mattress.

We used a pressure mapping tool to measure how evenly weight is distributed across the mattress, particularly around the hips, shoulders, and back.

Here are the results of the pressure relief test:

Ikea Asvang Mattress Pressure Map

For side sleepers, we saw that the map was mostly orange and yellow which indicates discomfort because the mattress doesn’t really relieve much pressure as side sleepers need a mattress to help conform their hips and shoulders.

For back sleepers, there were some green areas, meaning that the mattress was doing an okay job without adding too much pressure on our reviewer’s lumbar area.

For stomach sleepers, the mattress wasn’t doing much either, as the heavier the weight of the sleeper gets, the more pressure they feel laying on the ASVANG, which was shown in the red and orange areas of the map.

We gave the ASVANG a 2/5 on our pressure relief test.

Ikea Warranty and Company Policies

Warranty

The Ikea ASVANG mattress comes with a 10-year limited warranty, covering defects in materials and workmanship.

Trial

According to IKEA’s policy, the mattress is eligible for a 90-day trial period, allowing you to decide if it's the right fit. If within 90 days you feel it’s not suitable, you can exchange it for a different mattress one time. However, IKEA requires that you try the mattress for at least 4 weeks before making a decision, as it often takes time for both your body and the mattress to adjust to each other.

Returns

The ASVANG mattress is one of the products that IKEA offers a flexible return policy for. You have up to 365 days to return new, unopened things with your proof of purchase for a complete refund if you're not happy. IKEA accepts returns for opened items within 180 days as long as you have the receipt.

Shipping

Ikea ships the mattress, albeit the price varies depending on where you live. Because it comes roll-packed, handling and transportation are made simpler. It is also available for in-store pickup.

Pricing

The Ikea ASVANG is an affordable choice; depending on the size, it costs between $129 and $199. For those looking for a good mattress at a reasonable price, this makes it an accessible option.

It's important to keep in mind, though, that the reduced cost can come with certain compromises in terms of comfort and long-term durability.

SIZEDIMENSIONSPRICE

Full53 1/8″ x 74 3/8″ x 4 3/4″$179
Queen59 7/8″ x 79 1/2″ x 4 3/4″$199

The ASVANG mattress is one of IKEA's most affordable options, priced at $199 for a queen size, making it attractive to budget-conscious shoppers. While its low price is a clear advantage, offering basic support for a fraction of the cost of more premium mattresses, this affordability comes with trade-offs in comfort and durability.

Its minimal design and single foam layer may lack the support, cooling, and pressure relief features found in higher-end options, which can impact overall sleep quality, especially for regular use.

FAQs about Ikea ASVANG

Is the ASVANG mattress easy to transport?

Yes, the ASVANG mattress is roll-packed and compressed, which makes it easy to transport from the store or upon delivery. Its compact packaging allows it to fit into most vehicles and be easily moved through tight spaces like staircases or narrow hallways.

Can the ASVANG mattress be used on an adjustable bed frame?

While the ASVANG mattress can technically be placed on an adjustable bed frame, its single foam layer may not be as flexible or adaptive as more premium, multi-layer mattresses. It could work but may not conform as well to the frame’s movements.

Is the ASVANG mattress hypoallergenic?

The ASVANG mattress does not have specific hypoallergenic certifications, but the removable, machine-washable cover can help reduce allergens like dust and dander. However, it may not be the best choice for those with severe allergies.

Can you add a mattress topper to improve its comfort?

Yes, adding a mattress topper is a popular way to enhance the comfort of the ASVANG mattress. A memory foam or plush topper can help provide additional cushioning, pressure relief, and even cooling features if desired.

Is the ASVANG mattress suitable for heavier individuals?

The ASVANG mattress may not offer enough support for heavier individuals, as its single foam layer is thin and may not provide sufficient stability or durability. Heavier sleepers might experience more sinking and reduced comfort over time.

Conclusion

The ASVANG mattress is a practical, budget-friendly choice for those who need a basic, no-frills mattress without breaking the bank. While it offers firm support and easy maintenance, it lacks the comfort features, durability, and pressure relief that frequent or side sleepers might prefer.

Overall, the ASVANG is best suited for short-term use, guest rooms, or for individuals who prioritize affordability over advanced comfort.
