Plank Firm Mattress Overview

Pros

  • Highly Responsive: The Plank Firm mattress has a comparably great response which will help give you a more dynamic sleep experience and prevent any stuck feeling. This is a great option for people with limited mobility as it will ease their movement.

  • Supportive: The Plank Firm is considered a firm mattress that will provide ultimate support through its design and layers. The high-density foam creates a very firm level of support which will ensure proper spinal alignment and distribute body weight evenly across the mattress. It also incorporates the supreme response comfort foam that gives you great contouring by adapting to your body’s natural shape.

  • Great Cooling: This mattress comes with the upgrade option of GlacioTex™ Cooling Cover. This cover is designed to give you a cool sensation while sleeping by withdrawing heat away from your body, which helps regulate temperature throughout the mattress. This is specifically beneficial for people who get night sweats while sleeping.

  • Versatile: This mattress features a reversible design that allows sleepers to choose their desired sleep surface. The option to flip the mattress gives you versatility if you want to adjust your sleep depending on personal preference or seasonal changes.

Cons

  • Not for Side Sleepers: Firm mattresses like the Plank Firm offer excellent support and promote proper spinal alignment, but they may not be the best fit for everyone. Side sleepers who require more pressure relief on their hips and shoulders might find a slightly softer mattress more comfortable
  • Transfers Motion: While the Plank Firm's all-foam construction offers excellent responsiveness and support, its Supreme Response Comfort foam layer is known for slightly higher motion transfer. This means you might feel your partner's movements a bit more than on some other mattresses.

Who we Recommend the Plank Firm Mattress for

  • Back Sleepers: The Plank Firm mattress features high levels of support. It has a firm nature which is ideal for back sleepers and helps maintain proper spinal alignment. The high-density foam offers deep compression support that supports heavier parts of the body.
  • Combination Sleepers: The Supreme Response Comfort Foam in the Plank Firm mattress adds high responsiveness which allows for ease of movement. This is great for combination sleepers as they can swiftly change positions without any ‘stuck’ feeling.
  • Hot Sleepers: The GlacioTex™ Cooling Cover is a great optional upgrade for hot sleepers. It is engineered to give you a great cooling effect on contact. It also adds extra comfort for people who tend to overheat while sleeping by regulating temperature and maintaining a cool and dry sleep surface.

Unboxing the Plank Firm Mattress

Unboxing the Plank Firm mattress was simple and easy. It ships compressed in a box. We recommend you get the help of a friend as the mattress can be too heavy for you to carry on your own.

We unrolled the mattress onto our sleeping surface and monitored its expansion time. The Plank Firm mattress expanded completely in 3 hours which is expected as it is constructed with high-density foams. The edges of the mattress expanded along with the whole mattress, as they are not reinforced and do not require much time to retain their shape. Therefore indicating excellent corner expansion.

The Plank Firm bed did not give off a strong smell upon unpacking. We waited 2 days for this mattress to completely clear out its slight non-chemical odor. This is considered faster and better than the average off-gassing period of 3 days.

Firmness, Feel, and Comfort For Plank Firm Mattress

Plank Firm Mattress Firmness

The Plank Firm mattress comes with two sides. A firm side with an 8/10 score on the firmness scale, and an extra firm one scoring 10/10, which is firmer than any mattress we have reviewed. This firmness level provides the mattress with great support and does not allow for much sinkage.

Plank Firm Mattress Firmness

This firmness level is greatly beneficial for back sleepers and even stomach sleepers as it will help maintain spinal alignment and prevent any excessive sinkage in critical areas of the body. It also comes with a high-density support foam that adds to the firmness of the bed. This allows it to withstand pressure and gives the mattress an overall better durability.

Plank Firm Mattress Feel

The Plank Firm mattress feels supportive and stable on contact. It does not cushion your body as softer mattresses would, however, it provides a solid and sturdy surface and base.

The quilted top in this mattress is made of a continuous stitching pattern which adds a unique and textured feel to the mattress surface, enhancing the overall tactile experience of this bed.

Plank Firm mattress

The Supreme Response Comfort foam gives minimal contouring in comparison to softer mattresses. This might be a good feature for certain sleep positions, like back sleeping, as it will not leave you feeling engulfed.

The GlacioTex Cooling Cover adds a cool-to-the-touch sensation to your sleep experience. It is designed to dissipate body heat away from the mattress, allowing for temperature regulation and maintaining a cool and dry sleep environment.

Plank Firm Mattress Comfort

While the Plank Firm mattress may be one of the firmest mattresses we have reviewed, it still appeals to certain sleepers and provides them with their needs which allows them to enjoy a comfortable sleep experience.

The Supreme Response Comfort foam offers a level of contouring that balances out the firm feel of the mattress. It adds a soft and plush feel to the mattress surface, allowing it to adapt to your body’s natural curves.

The firmness level of this bed is ideal for back and stomach sleepers, as it helps alleviate any pressure points that may cause pain or discomfort. It also helps with proper spinal alignment which ensures comfortable and pain-free sleep.

The comfort level offered by mattresses varies based on the body weight and sleep position. We conducted a few tests to evaluate the mattress’s ability to provide comfort.

Constructions, Materials, and Design

Materials and Design

  3. High-density Support Foam: This layer of dense foam provides extra firmness and support. It helps evenly distribute the weight across the mattress, allowing you to sleep comfortably without any increased pressure points.
  4. Supreme Response Comfort Foam: This layer contours your body and adds extra comfort to your sleep. It gives the mattress a responsive feel which allows for a more dynamic sleep experience.
  5. Quilted Bottom: Similar to the quilted top, this layer is made of a continuous stitching pattern which ensures consistent support and firmness across the entire mattress surface.

Performance of Plank Firm Mattress

Cooling

The cooling effect of a mattress is necessary for a comfortable sleep experience. This is particularly important for people who sleep hotter during the night.

To conduct our standard cooling test, we lie down on the mattress for 20 minutes, waiting for the bed to absorb body heat, and then measure the temperature of the mattress.

We did not notice any signs of body heat build-up and the mattress surface felt cool throughout the test.

The Plank Firm mattress comes with an optional GlacioTex Cooling Cover which helps dissipate body heat away from the mattress. This ensures temperature regulation and allows for a cool and comfortable sleeping environment. Sleepers who tend to get hot during the night will benefit greatly from this feature as it will prevent them from overheating.

The Plank Firm mattress scores a 4.8/5 on our cooling test.

Responsiveness

The responsiveness of a mattress refers to how fast it can adjust to your change of movements. A responsive mattress is great for combination sleepers as it will allow for swift position shifting and will prevent them from getting any “stuck” feeling.

For our responsiveness test, we use a 20-pound ball. Once fully settled in, we measure how long the mattress takes to recover and retain its original shape.

The response time recorded was 0.2 seconds. This refers to the high level of responsiveness in this mattress.

The Plank Firm mattress incorporates the Supreme Response Comfort foam which gives the mattress the ability to quickly adapt to your body’s movements and change of positions. This creates an easy and more dynamic sleep experience, making this mattress an ideal choice for people who have mobility issues.

We rate the Plank Firm a 5/5 for responsiveness.

Motion Isolation

A mattress’s ability to isolate motion is an essential factor in a mattress for couples. A mattress with good motion isolation will allow you or your partner to sleep without any disruptions.

For our first test, we placed a glass of water on one side of the mattress and dropped a 20-pound ball on the other. The water on the other side showed slight movement.

In the second test, one person lay on the mattress while another rolled around on the other side of the bed. The person lying at rest reported that they felt some movement from the other side.

The Plank Firm mattress prioritizes a supportive, responsive sleep experience. While this may not offer maximum motion isolation, its firmness provides excellent spinal alignment and pressure relief for many sleepers.

Regarding motion isolation, the Plank Firm mattress scores a 3.5/5.

Edge Support

Edge support is necessary for a more usable sleep surface and for maintaining the mattress’s structure. This is particularly important for people who prefer to sleep or sit on the edge of the bed.

We tested out edge support performance by applying pressure to the edges of the mattress and observing to see its level of compression. We noticed that it didn’t compress, and the edges sprung back quickly.

We also sat on the edges of the bed and felt secure. We felt minimal levels of sinkage that aren’t disturbing to one’s sleep. That is thanks to its firmness that allows the mattress to feel supportive despite being all foam.

We give the Plank Firm mattress a 4/5 for our edge support performance test.

Noise

A quiet night’s sleep is crucial for a restful and undisturbed night. Mattresses with coil systems integrated into them are more likely to emit noise, such as squeaks or creaks.

We conducted our standard noise test by dropping a 20-pound ball onto the mattress. With the Plank Firm bed, we used highly sensitive microphones to listen for any noises produced. The mattress was silent.

The Plank Firm mattress is an all-foam bed, which means it does not include a coil system that might potentially cause noise. Sensitive sleepers will enjoy this feature as it ensures a night free of disturbance and quiet.

We give the Plank Firm mattress a 5/5 for noise performance.

Sex

To evaluate a mattress’s sex performance, we must take into account its bounce levels, edge support, responsiveness, and noise performance.

The Plank Firm mattress gives excellent response through its Supreme Response Comfort Foam. This layer allows the mattress to adapt to your positioning, creating an ease of movement for you and your partner. For edge support, the mattress performs average.

As for bounce, the Plank Firm showed moderate bounce levels which will suffice for the majority of couples. Finally, the noise performance on this mattress was great, as couples will be able to enjoy intimate moments without any disturbances.

The Plank Firm mattress rates a 4.5/5 for sex performance.

Pressure Relief

A mattress’s ability to relieve pressure is crucial for a comfortable and pain-free sleep experience. There are critical areas of the body that require pressure relief for a properly aligned spine while sleeping.

Our pressure relief test is carried out by using a pressure mapping system to measure the pressure levels throughout the body while lying on the bed.

The pressure map below displays the results we collected.

Plank Firm mattress pressure relief

  • Hip Region: The map displayed blue and green colors which indicated the moderate level of pressure relief. The Plank Firm mattress struggled to alleviate pressure points in the hip region due to its firmness level. This indicates that side sleepers will feel that this mattress is too firm.
  • Back Region: The pressure map revealed a consistent blue color which refers to the absence of pressure in the back area. This tells us that the Plank Firm mattress eliminated pressure points excellently regarding the lumbar region.
  • Shoulders Region: The Plank Firm did not relieve much pressure in the shoulders area, as firm mattresses do not relieve a lot of pressure as opposed to softer mattresses.

Overall, we believe the Plank Firm mattress scored a 4.5/5 on our pressure relief test.
